5 Essential Secrets to Healthy Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important things we need, but it’s also the one thing we often don’t get enough of. Whether you have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or getting enough, here are five essential secrets for healthy sleep.

1. Find Your Sleep Cycle

Do you find yourself yawning when your favorite late night show starts, but wide awake by the time it’s over? It could mean that you’ve missed your natural sleep cycle. Pay attention to the time you normally feel sleepy and try going to bed instead of pushing through. Otherwise you’ll have a hard time falling asleep, and it can be a long time before your next “sleep window” comes along.

2. Create a Bedtime Routine

A regular bedtime ritual can help you unwind from the day and fall asleep more easily. Pick a time each night when you put away all the electronic devices and turn the lights down low. Finish off with a relaxing bath, a warm glass of milk or whatever makes you feel comfortable and cozy. By the time you get under the covers, your body will be free from the stress of the day and ready to snooze.

3. Only Use Your Bedroom for Sleeping

Okay, we can think of one other activity, but the important thing is to keep work, TV watching and other activities that keep you either stressed or alert out of the bedroom. By keeping your bedroom a place of rest and comfort, you’ll have an easier time letting go of the day and falling asleep.

4. Don’t Eat Before Bed

Some people need a light night snack to help them sleep, but lying down after you’ve eaten a lot can make you feel bloated and uncomfortable. Avoid eating a big meal 2-3 hours before you go to bed. While you’re at it, skip the nightcap since alcohol can reduce your quality of sleep and make you wake up more often.

5. Exercise

Many of us spend a lot of the day in our heads which can keep us constantly buzzing and alert. Getting a moderate amount of exercise every day can help boost the effects of natural sleep hormones like melatonin and make it easier to fall asleep once the lights go out. Just don’t exercise right before bed or you’ll be too stimulated to sleep.
